Itinerary

A circular route that offers breathtaking views of the valley between Monte Macchia and Vacone, with sights extending all the way to the mountainous profiles of Umbria. The first major stop is Cottanello, where you can admire from the road the Hermitage of San Cataldo — a striking sanctuary clinging to the mountainside. Although currently closed for restoration, its unique architecture, with three arches and small bell towers blending seamlessly into the rock, is a spectacle of rare beauty. The route continues along the road ascending toward the Prati di Cottanello, where you can reach the San Pietro Quarry, which can be visited upon request. This is where the famous Cottanello red marble was extracted. This pinkish stone, valued since ancient times, became a symbol of Roman Baroque: artists such as Bernini and Borromini chose it to adorn masterpieces like St. Peter’s Basilica and Sant’Agnese in Agone. The quarry visit lasts about one hour — a true journey through the history of art. Back in the saddle, the route leads to Montasola, a timeless village with its magnificent “Il Monte” Park, a panoramic terrace overlooking the town. Afterwards, you can return to Casperia, completing the loop.
