The route begins in Casperia, a medieval village whose spiral structure bears witness to the ancient Sabine fortifications, perched for defense and control of the valleys below. Pedaling north, you reach the “twins” of Sabina: Rocchette and Rocchettine. These two opposing villages evoke centuries-old feudal struggles; while the former is still inhabited, the ghost town of Rocchettine, with its ruined medieval fortress and fortifications, offers a crystallized image of the abandoned late Middle Ages. The route then continues towards the valley, leading to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Vescovio, the ancient Roman Forum Novum. This place is the spiritual heart of Sabina: the current 12th-century Romanesque cathedral stands on Roman and early Christian ruins, preserving Roman school frescoes of inestimable historical value. Here, in the shadow of the monuments that marked the transition from paganism to Christianity, you can enjoy a picnic lunch in a peaceful atmosphere. The return to Casperia passes through landscapes that preserve the area’s centuries-old agricultural tradition, completing a journey that intertwines Roman archaeology, medieval fortifications, and millennia-old spirituality.
